Researching peatlands

AUTHOR Center for International Forestry Research
In Riau province, in the Indonesian island of Sumatra, CIFOR scientists are researching what happens to peatlands after they are drained, burned and then restored. The research involves re-wetting peatlands, combined with re-vegetating the landscape as the organic materials present in peat are often forgotten amid the bigger restoration picture. The emerging scientific evidence is being used to inform the policies of Indonesia's Peatlands Restoration Agency (BRG), as well as global climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
