  • Susan is a professor of physical geography in the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment at the University of Leicester (UK). Her research focuses on the ecology and functioning of tropical/temperate peatlands and forest ecosystems; the restoration of peatlands and management strategies to mitigate their emissions; and the sustainable management of peatland resources, including human-nature interactions, livelihoods and support. Susan has been involved in research projects on sustainable peatlands in Indonesia, Southeast Asia, the Congo basin as well as England and Wales. Her work been published in a range of scientific journals, including Nature; Nature Climate Change; Global Change Biology; Forest Ecology and Management; and Biological Conservation. Susan received the Royal Geographical Society’s Busk Medal in 2013 and the Society for Ecological Restoration’s Theodore M. Sperry Award in 2015. She was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2013 and has been appointed to an assessment panel for REF2021, the UK’s system for evaluating the quality of research in its higher education institutions. Susan holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Nottingham and a doctorate in plant ecology from the same university.
