Mechthild Caspers is head of the division “Precautionary Soil Conservation, Peatland Conservation; Biological Diversity and Climate Change” in the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. She is a physicist, who during her studies also focussed on ecological and environmental issues. She joined the ministry in 2002.

Current objectives include the development of the German Government’s Peatland Protection Strategy, sustainable implementation of peat and soil related measures in the German Climate Action Programme, international cooperation on soil and peatland conservation, as well as strengthening synergies between nature conservation and climate mitigation and adaption. A topic of special interest is the promotion of nature based solutions that can simultaneously contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation, halting the loss of biological diversity, land degradation neutrality and other Sustainable Development Goals.
