  • Lulie Melling is the Director of Tropical Peat Research Laboratory (TPRL) Unit in the Chief Minister’s Department of Sarawak, Malaysia. She received her Bachelor of Science in Geography from University of Malaya in 1990, followed by a Master degree in Agricultural Science with distinction from University of Reading, United Kingdom in 1997. She obtained her PhD from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2005. She began her professional career in 1991 as a researcher in Soil Management Branch, Department of Agriculture, Sarawak and had ever since gained her expertise in tropical peatland research. Her dedication and passion in pursuing the study of tropical peatland has led her to take up an entirely new challenge in 2008 to establish TPRL, with the mandate to take lead in research and development of tropical peatland in Sarawak, emphasising on the importance of tropical peat land and its impacts to the environment. Her research primarily concentrates on the sustainability and management of peatland and its biodiversity as well as agro-industry on tropical peatland. She has made major impression in the scientific world with her publications in the form of peer-reviewed papers and books. She has also conducted numerous high-profile research projects in collaboration with other experts from within and outside Malaysia. In order to ensure the knowledge and understanding of tropical peatland transferred to the community effectively, she has conducted various conferences and workshop since 2007. She has also been appointed the peat soil expert and advisor for various international organisations. She is now an active member of the Malaysian Soil Science Society (MSSS), the Malaysian Peat Society (MPS), the International Peat Society (IPS) and the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS). Currently, she is the Congress General for the 15th International Peat Congress (IPC) 2016.
