Storing 30 to 40 percent of global soil carbon deposits on only 3 percent of the world’s land surface, tropical peatland ecosystems are a key component for mitigating climate change – and crucial to preserve. Yet, tropical peatlands remain one of the least studied ecosystems – and one of the most vulnerable due to the combined pressures of agriculture, climate change, pollution growing populations and infrastructure development.
Introducing the International Tropical Peatland Center, an international research center based in Bogor, Indonesia. Formed by the governments of Indonesia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo and Peru, the International Tropical Peatland Center will bring together researchers from around the world to share lessons and to collaborate on practical action for peatland conservation.
